Jury Trial

I was a juror on a criminal trial this week. A lady was charged with a DUI and we found her guilty. I really enjoyed the opportunity to serve as a juror and I was glad I was picked.

You people seem to have all the exciting and unusual happenings. At my age, I have never been called for jury duty. Neither was Grandpa. And I always wanted to!

I’ve been on a couple of juries and it was interesting both times.

Was this her first time? I hope she learns a valuable lesson. What sentence was handed down?

I, too, have always wanted to serve. I have only been called once and that was in CA after we had moved back to TX from there. And now I never will until I’m too old to be able to serve. Sigh…..

We didn’t get to know if it was her first offense or not. We also did not learn her sentence. I hope she learns too!

Did you get to ask questions of the judge and attorneys after the trial was over? That’s when we found out the guy we convicted of child molestation had done the same thing as a 17 year old minor (but that wasn’t admisible in court). Each time I have served, we have had the opportunity to find out more information that was not given during the trial. I’m surprised they didn’t tell you if it was her first offense, even during the trial.

Usually juries don’t get to even consider the possible sentence while deliberating. Did she cause any injury to anyone? If not, she’ll probably just get probation, fined, and maybe required to go to AA.

We could not ask the judge, but could have talked to the attorneys. The defense attorney was not someone we wanted to chat with so we all left.

The funny thing is, she was in a little accident in the Costco parking lot. A guy hit her and admitted fault. She insisted on calling the police and when they came they smelled alcohol. She really did it to herself.

Thankfully she was taken off the road that day. Her BAC was 0.101. Which is above AZ law of 0.08.
